America: We invented this disruptive new thing! China: We reinvented it as a cheap thing. Europe: We civilised it so people can actually live with the thing.

What does it mean when some name is the “official" name of some place? Is everybody required to use that name? No. In most countries it just means the public administration is legally required to use it. Everybody else is free to call the place anything they want. Unofficial names aren’t illegal. Google did not have to relabel Lake Ontario for US users, they decided to do that voluntarily: yet another example of anticipatory obedience from the once-free US of A. https://en.wikipedia.o...

Today I learned that the constitution of Germany contains a clause which says that certain rules about how the state is organised can *never* be changed, not even by a large majority in parliament or in a referendum. https://www.bpb.de/kurz-knapp/lexika/das-junge-politik-lexikon/320258/ewigkeitsklausel/

Next time somebody asks me a question that requires some thinking, I’m going to ask them to perform a short unnecessary computation first to prove they are serious. Yes, I am implementing #ALTCHA in my user interface!

“The concept of ‘cost rental’ is summed up in the name. The rent for a home should only cover development and maintenance costs. The goal is not to make a profit.” https://www.thejournal.ie/affordable-rent-scheme-price-cuts-analysis-7022981-Apr2026/ This shouldn't really be such a radical idea. Non-profit housing is the only obvious way out to bring rents back into human proportions.
