Disaster responders were using the data shared there for situational awareness, and were communicating in real-time with their constituents. Today’s events underscore just how dangerous it is for society to come to rely on private platforms as critical infrastr...

As I'm reading the introduction to the January 6 report, one thing that strikes me is that, while the report recounts the Jan 6 committee's efforts to scrutinize social media platforms for what they didn't do to prevent the events of January 6 (e.g. the promotion of false narratives that motivated and then were used to mobilize participants), we are witnessing a parallel effort from the right to strategically frame the limited actions that platforms did take as &quot...

CIP's @mikecaulfield examines unfounded allegations (spreading on X) of a "conflict of interest" in vote counting in the Iowa. Mike explains, "the real question is not whether the offered evidence is 'real,'" but whether the evidence supports the claims. https://www.cip.uw.edu/2024/01/14/iowa-caucus-election-conspiracy-theory/

Our UW @uwcip "rapid research" team examined the cross-platform dynamics of political influence — tracing how a single video (and its creator) garnered attention by tapping into prominent frames (among conservative influencers) of "rigged elections" and a "border crisis". https://www.cip.uw.edu/2024/03/14/video-border-crisis-rigged-2024-election/

I appreciate the WA Post drawing attention to attacks on researchers in the field of online misinformation, but there a few pieces of this story (e.g. about researchers "buckling") that just aren't accurate, at least not from my perspective at UW. I'm going to post (below) my full comment here to the Post (sent weeks ago), most of which was excluded in this piece: https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2023/09/23/online-misinformation-jim-jordan/
