While experimenting alternatives for #vim, I stumbled upon #EVi (https://codeberg.org/evi-editor/evi) a hard-fork of Vim v9.1.0 (Jan 2024) before AI was used in the project. It looks like vim-static but based on the 9.x branch, which allows some of my stupid customizations (that 8.x does not support). It compiles and runs on #OpenBSD. Currently running make test... Any thoughts on this fork?

Hi @netbsd@mastodon.sdf.org After looking at marc-dot-info, I didn’t see a lot more activities. Maybe I didn’t look the right ML archive. I’m just wondering: do you actually see a lot more feedback and bug reports activity on the project or not (yet)?

Somebody in my TL asked for #NetBSD Mint. That reminded me I once covered #OpenBSD with Mint sauce. https://www.tumfatig.net/2019/openbsd-with-mint-sauce/ This can probably apply to any other OS where #Xfce runs.

What about someone going to EuroBSDcon2027 with the talk: "In 2026, everyone switched to NetBSD, the Foundation doubled its income, and then this happened…" Whatever ending this is, it will probably be worth it.

Following some naughty (not) remarks from here, I went to another gallery of the #ThinkCentre rabbit hole. Quick and dirty look at #FreeBSD, #NetBSD and #OpenBSD power usage on the AMD powered M715q. #RunBSD https://www.tumfatig.net/2026/m715q-power-usage-and-the-bsdes/

How fun is this... the Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-8500T @ 2.10 GHz does not seem to use more watts when IDLE than the Intel(R) Celeron(R) G4900T @ 2.90GHz. Quite nice since the first provides 6 cores when the later only provides 2.

I always found the "despite not being written in Rust" comments so lame… until I realized I always go "oh, it’s Java, fuck that!". #KnowYourBiaises

Boring Teams’ meeting happening so let’s play cool kid. #NetBSD 11.0 on the #ThinkPad P14s Gen 5 AMD. Unfortunately, this fairly recent machine seems to not be well supported: no DRM (1024x768 in vesa mode), no WiFi, no Touchpad, no suspend/resume (needs the S0ix thing). Looks like a no-go on this particular one 🤷♂️ Full dmesg is there https://dmesgd.nycbug.org/dmesgd?do=view&id=9184. Bad news are still news.

I think this is the sign I’m trying to escape from the current shit World… No-sane-body really needs that many #ThinkCentre, even to #RunBSD…

Someone asked: what’s the best way to keep your Linux machine save? I refrained from replying: shutdown -p now.

This is a sandbox. If something or somebody escapes it and start ruining the World and harassing people, it only means a single thing: bad parenting and poor adulting model. yes, this post is about a current technology hype.

Well ok… maybe 10kg of laptop is a bit too much… even for a #CyberDeck like thing. https://www.durabook.com/en/products/z14i-dx3-rugged-triple-screen-workstation/#1528712267367-cc05b50b-7791cb06-8d2d

Reposting this because I got :runbsd: #RunBSD stickers at #EuroBSDcon2026 and can now illustrate the post with a proper image :D Also updated the temperatures screenshot. So that's basically how much watts are #NetBSD and #OpenBSD using by default on this AOOSTAR WTR Pro NAS machine and how to have #FreeBSD use less watts as possible while still operating Jail and #bhyve services. https://www.tumfatig.net/2026/overview-of-aoostar-wtr-pro-on-bsd/ #selfhost #homelab

This aimed to be a simple :runbsd: #RunBSD post about the AOOSTAR WTR Pro NAS system. But it ended being nearly a "Tune #FreeBSD for power consumption" one :p Anyway, I very like this tiny #HomeServer. And it fits wells in my #HomeLab closet. https://www.tumfatig.net/2026/overview-of-aoostar-wtr-pro-on-bsd/ #OpenBSD #NetBSD #SelfHost

One of the main problem with #Slackware #Linux is that it is rock solid. Why is this a problem? Because I never feel like doing updates! If it ain’t broken, don’t fix it.

There seem to be a trend on my IG timeline for "I’m moving from Windows to Linux because old computer are still valuable". Which is: pretty nice.probably just Meta trying to please my confirmation biais.not sure it’s that of a trend in normies’ TL. Anyway. That made me smile because my todo list has: check which *BSD has a working OneDrive client so I can migrate $WIFE laptop from Linux to that BSD. 😅 Yes, I know, OneDrive. But not all wars can be fought and won at the same time.

When you think, long ago, VMware had to prove it was escape-proof, had to be audited and labelled escape-proof, so that we start thinking maybe we could virtualize one or two physical servers. Then, this 👇🙄 https://masto.ai/@phoronix/117051439253241028
