Long time no post. I had let my mastodon instance bitrot quite a bit. Maintaining a server is kind of a pain. But I asked an AI agent to fix it up and it seems to have done a good job. Also, I just had brain surgery. Weird times.

Now that LLMs can turn any dumb idea I might have into a functioning web app, should I give my agent the ability to register domain names itself?

@evan it is done, and so is my maps app that renames everything to "America": https://americize.com/ Apart from some 502 errors that the agent will track down logs for while I sleep. I hope.

I vibe coded a map app that renames everything to "America" so that Trump can stop trying to rename stuff. https://americize.com/

I'm about to head to Walnut Creek (home of the CD-ROM) for my first radiation appointment for my brain cancer. Then tonight I start my chemo pills. It's going. To be an interesting six weeks.

I'm not racist, but why is it that American companies only seem to be good at making knock-offs of Asian products instead of innovating themselves? Is it a cultural difference? https://www.apple.com/iphone-duo/

I gave a local AI agent root access to all the machines in my homelab, but with really strict guidelines around planning things and security practices. On one hand it's great - my network machines are in great shape relative to my normal sporadic neglect. On the other hand I'm dealing with a surly (virtual) sysadmin all the time...

@tubetime @lcamtuf it just came today and I've already read the first couple of chapters.

Remember, memory safety is what makes PHP such a famously secure programming language.

@cstross I miss that internet too. I remember being cranky when people started using fonts and background images. But it was mostly full of white dudes like me and I enjoy the variety of people I get to hear now.

@spacehobo @mcc sometimes you need to install autoconf to regenerate autoconf scripts because the version of autoconf used by the distributor is too old to know something about your system that's important for some reason.

Why can't American AI companies give their model variants meaningful names like Chinese ones do. What's a Sol or Fable or Sonnet or Argon? Just tell me if it's small, cheap and fast or big, slow and expensive, or the one in the middle!

Trump applies the same rules to the Russia/Ukraine conflict that every administration has applied to the Israel/Palestine conflict and everyone loses their mind.

@alexr @ceejbot I'd generally suggest against unpacking tarballs in the root of production (for sufficiently homelab values of "production") systems. Not that I've never done it...

@peternlewis @paddington I was supposed to need an interview to be able to skip all of the lines (TSA PreCheck / Global Entry), but a couple of days ago I just got approved. I assume as a cost cutting measure they're lowering the bar for skipping the normal security measures.

The joke's on Trump. Australia mostly exports iron ore and bauxite rather than steel and aluminium because we're terrible at having value-added industries and like to just export our raw dirt some someone else can make all of the big profit. https://www.theguardian.com/business/2025/mar/12/us-rules-out-tariff-exemption-for-australia-after-trump-considered-it-and-considered-against-it

So if Trump is taxing mobile phones, computers and computer accessories at vastly lower rates than other electronics, is anything with a CPU going to be classified as a computer and anything with USB or HDMI ports going to be classified as an accessory?

People who say Kilmar Abrego Garcia is innocent until proven guilty but don't think KSM is innocent until proven guilty (even though we've imprisoned him for more than 20 years and still haven't found enough evidence to bring him to trial) kind of disgust me.
