Saying this as a polyamorish queer person: it's extremely important to start and maintain friendships that aren't romantic or sexual. Many of us get rejected by our families. Sex and romance should not be the price one is required to pay to get found family.

Trade is how one interacts with others one doesn't have community with. A system that demands we add transactions to everything just to survive is one that deprives us of the joy of loving each other. Good morning and may love be with you!

Modern desktop operating systems feel much like an apartment that has become cluttered and dusty because the person living in it doesn't have the energy to maintain it and "helpful" people keep bringing them stuff.

Do you have any idea how many people have thought kind things about you but didn't say anything because they didn't want to be misunderstood as trying to get something from you?

@andnull it's the work for "exposure" trap that any artist could have warned us about if only we would listen to artists sometimes. GitHub was presented to me as something I should be on to maybe get a job later. Like LinkedIn but doing labor for free. Now all of it is catching fire, I'm finally in a mood for programming again.

What I'm writing is -takes deep breath- an epistolary post-apocalyptic biopunk urban fantasy queer coming of age novel. (Is it still urban fantasy when the cities are the places where the monsters aren't?) Precisely naming the genre gave me some clarity of the moral of the story. The narrator is raised by people who care about her becoming responsible, not conformist. Their nonconformity leads to them being harassed and attempted murder. The more powerful people who stumble in...

Is my programming style... punk? My interest in programming experiments does correlate with how suitable the times are for punk rock. I was burned out for a very long time, and didn't expect anyone would want to use anything I might build. Now IT is on fire and I'm motivated. Creative work is a social activity, even when you spend a lot of time alone for it. Yes, it's possible to create things only for yourself, it can be good, but I care about other people enough to h...

In the 80s and 90s there were pop songs about "please don't do racism". Have I just not been paying attention to pop for that long or did that stop about 20-25 years ago? Noticing the propaganda stopped saying "please don't hate each other" that long ago creeps me out.

I'm grounded because I'm about to work on a computer. While grabbing the screwdriver, I lightly touch the side of my partner's keyboard. ZAP! Wtf. There are at least two things wrong there.

There's a pigeon in my neighborhood that is white with grey wings and a yellow beak. I've only seen it at a distance. I wonder if an off by one error is causing a gull texture to be applied to a low poly pigeon model.

Earlier this year I noticed I experience synesthesia: I feel music in my body. I wasn't aware of it because I thought I felt physical vibrations. I had a "wait a minute, that's not possible" moment while wearing headphones. Today I ate an apple and felt two "wet" cold spots on my face as usual, something I was used to ignoring. Now I wonder if I really am allergic to mint or if it makes my face itch through synesthesia. It would still be reall...

Maybe it's because I found good neighbors, maybe it's because I embraced being weird, probably a bit of both, but I noticed it has been a long while since anyone was pushy with wrong assumptions. Common past assumptions have been that I needed a dom (when actually my dominant vibes disappear because of depression), and that I needed just a tiny bit more advice to become a Western Buddhist too (I'm something with different goals, and have a chip on my shoulder about mind...

Here's something I only just figured out how to explain about myself: I'm happiest when I'm confidently pursuing something I want. This seems like a personality trait, so what I can say about it may be helpful to others. To be clear, "something" doesn't have to be physical, it could for example be knowledge, or attention from an interesting person. I don't mean flow state. Flow is great but not the point here. I also don't mean...

I'm reading about self-determination theory, and it fits with the way my life has been improving recently. I had no sense of belonging anywhere, and apparently that will kill my feelings of autonomy and competence. Starting to find the right people on fedi has helped. Of course there's also other things going on. It's the end of the dark season. Progesterone is great for my emotions AND my body is finally changing again, away from causing dysphoria.
