Babelfont added a lot of complexity to Runebender I am not happy about. UFO had the right idea: cross-platform, cross-app, human-readable, future-proof source files. Its execution was not perfect, especially for variable fonts, but the Glyphs format was a regression in many ways. The font industry should spend less effort accommodating Babelfont and Glyphs, and more fixing UFO or making a better format with the same cross-platform, cross-app, human-readable, future-proof source files goal.

Runebender has a new mode for working on NUFOs, source files for the the neural network based NTF format I am working on. I will be demoing this at the Font Tech & AI Online Conference later this week.

Runebender has a new mode for working on NUFOs, the source files for the neural-network-based NTF format I’m developing. I’ll be demoing it at the Font Tech & AI Online Conference later this week, and informally at ATypI Sharjah later this month.

I used less python in 2026 vs previous years. The main benefit it had (ease of use) in the text editor is completely meaningless now that agents can write all the code. And the tooling around Python was never as easy to use as the language, so if agents write all the code, Rust is easier and more beginner friendly and BASH is already part of every workflow.

I finally made a DMG, trying to get v0.1 out before I fly to Dubai for ATypI Sharjah.

Running Qwen3 4B locally inside Runebender on an M4-Pro 48GB MBP. About 52 tokens/s. The editor starts its own llama-server and talks to it over its API on localhost. The model gets the same tools Claude Code gets through the editor's MCP server, but nothing leaves the machine.

I am gatekeeping this workflow but I have a bunch of Codex resets I need to use before the end of the month, so I got a draw, proof, review feedback loop going with GPT-6 Astra that is doing a really good job adding missing Hebrew and Bold drawings to Virtua Grotesk. I only use Runebender to clean up the last 5% of the work, and I think with better context files I can get that down to 1%.

When you start Claude in the Runebender source directory it automatically detects and ask you to connect to the MCP server.

The smart TV modding stuff is beautiful, AI removing human design slop. Authorless AI design is going to be better than ego driven human design is so many areas.

I started work on a new neural network based post-OpenType font format this morning, and I already have a working demo! You can copy, paste, delete, type, move the cursor around, move a kashida axis with a slider. It's all open source and made with the simplest possible neural network. https://elih.net/blog/neuraltype/

I can finally talk about and show what I've been working on recently. I designed and built most of this compositor in Rust/WASM. I'm really proud of how it turned out! https://youtu.be/RvnahgxmqvE?si=MdWQBRrhDMgrxO-I

The compositor node I worked on for Fuser has typographic features like tracking, line height, variable font support, and kerning with Option + ← or → keys. The goal was to achieve the same typographic detail as in Figma, InDesign, DrawBot, etc.

I'm working on a new feature for img2bez in Runebender Xilem that lets you use an existing outline and refit it onto a raster image. To test this out, I'm using Claude Code and Nano Banana to make a variable font fork of Instrument Serif called Instruments Serif (weight range 400–900).

It's extremely buggy and broken right now, but I actually got QuiverAI somewhat working for tracing background images in Runebender Xilem. If I can get this working, you just need a QuiverAI API key in ~/.config/runebender and hit Cmd+Shift+Y to trace a background image.

We don't talk enough about how much better UFO is than Glyphs for working with Claude Code. The Font Engineering Licensing Board needs to revoke the credentials of everyone involved with pushing the Glyphs format.

Work in progress: a fork of Instrument Serif that turns it into a 400-900 weight variable font. Open to critique and criticism, it's about 50/50 AI generated and hand drawn. https://github.com/eliheuer/instruments-serif

I think true modernists wanted free & open source AI automated design one hundred years ago.

I am running autoreaseach loops all weekend to improve img2bez. This is an unsolved problem in open-source vector graphics that can be numerically evaluated. There is low hanging fruit like this everywhere.
