RE: https://post.lurk.org/@hellocatfood/117466702218675797 for the first time, there is a broad realization that there is no such thing as “intellectual property.” there never was. the users and the contributors are the intelligence. and nobody owns them. i’m grateful for this moment in history.

the fact that people from all corners of the earth are talking to me about sovereign desktop initiatives leaves me both hopeful and paranoid. please let this not be the “hey, i wrote a mastodon client too” moment for the free desktop.

spent all day ripping apart the rotten ramp behind our new house. found an even more rotten deck joist hidden behind it. whether a real-world construction project or a software project, it's always yaks all the way down. 🐂 maybe i'll get to build stairs next week.

welcome. we are having a 4-for-1 sale on well-intentioned bad ideas. if you can't find one you like, we have plenty more in the back.

while prototypes and research are cool, the @modal work on reflection feels like some of the first production-grade local-first software delivered in earnest, and built to last. this article is a great summary of their work so far: https://www.prototypefund.de/en/blog/the-road-to-a-local-first-app-ecosystem

oh man, this is too good. company whose entire brand is "calendly, but open source sort of" gets rid of the second half. now just: "calendly, but slightly crappier." excellent. (this is why saas apps need to be #upstreamfirst ... but that's always been true.) RE: https://floss.social/@downey/116409507850202185

RE: https://mastodon.social/@jimmac/116401876030076912 spent the entire day thinking and writing about community infrastructure and solutions to the "repeatability problem" (albeit in a very different context). this is a great example of designing for repeatability, and one of the organizational choices that makes gnome such a delight to use today. ❤️🙏

had a quick chat with @ptomato who pointed out that it isn't immediately obvious to all incoming #gnome directors that their responsibilities while sitting on the board are very different from those of a contributor. one of these aspects is donations: directors are *required* to fundraise. as a consequence, they are *expected* to donate. (it's very hard to ask for money for an organization you do not support financially yourself.) we'll make this expectation clearer in...

RE: https://mastodon.social/@sri/116308791003218530 Thanks for this, Sri. 🙏 It's important for those of us who engage in forms of racism that don't look like racism to examine our own behaviour and the platforms we participate in. This isn't a fun read. But if you're white and on Mastodon, take the time to at least bookmark it or add it to your podcast listening list. Read it in a cafe. Listen to it on a long walk sometime. Take the time to hear the voices this...

antonio zugaldia has built a cute little speech-to-text #gnome doodad called speed of sound: https://www.speedofsound.io/getting-started/ it's on flathub now. i'm playing with it, and it's pretty slick! i don't think he's on mastodon, sadly: https://bsky.app/profile/zugaldia.com/post/3mios6tn2pc2c
