@pzmyers@octodon.social Of course it's no surprise that the right is so fiercely anti-intellectual. University/ college does reduce people's authoritarian tendencies and tends to make them more liberal - not because the professors indoctrinate students, but simply because being exposed to a diverse set of people broadens people's horizon. Rightwing authoritarianism requires isolation to be maintained, and they know it. (Anyone who is interested in this, read "The...

@miki_lou@mastodon.social @clarablackink@writing.exchange @kimlockhartga @bookstodon Yes! I often go to my favourite local bookstore just to browse (and will almost always walk out with at least one new book), but I also use their online store frequently to order books for pick-up (which saves on shipping and usually is as fast as Amazon would be). I vastly prefer this to using a corporate online retailer.

@ryancordell I love that! :heart_cyber: Reminds me a little of how when I was a kid, a friend and I used to make little animated films in Microsoft PowerPoint. (You watched them by playing the presentation.) You use the technological tools given to you!

Over the weekend I #read *Women Talking* by Miriam Toews, a Canadian author from a Mennonite family who draws on her family's background in much of her writing. Before I read her latest novel *Fight Night* last year, I had never heard of the author - and I was missing out! By the nature of its subject - it was inspired by a real-life series of horrific rapes and sexual assaults in a Bolivian Mennonite colony and follows a group of Mennonite women grappling with the aftermath of a simil...

@jillrhudy @bookstodon Yes, my copy is the edition that already comes with the "Now a Major Motion Picture" on the cover! I actually suspect the release of the movie is why it was so prominently displayed in my local bookshop the day I bought it. It had been on my list anyway, but seeing it displayed is what prompted me to buy it - and hopefully many other people, too. I would like to watch the movie some time; I think this is a good novel to make into a film, and it sounds l...

@tzimmer_history@mastodon.social Thank you for continuing to put the finger on these issues! I could explode with anger every time I just see all these disingenuous articles, and I don't constantly have to write and talk about them for a living; I can switch this s*** off. It's so exhausting. Keep up the good work! 💪

@seldo@alpaca.gold #InNextLife has a free iOS beta right now. No in-game purchases, no ads. I really enjoy that game! (I play on Windows myself.)

Robert Evans from #BehindTheBastards and #CoolZoneMedia has another well-reaearched article out on his Substack: https://shatterzone.substack.com/p/the-liberal-media-always-fails-against It analyses how big mainstream liberal media organisations have historically failed to recognise and name the threat of fascism, focusing instead on perceived threats from the left, even while nominally being pro-democracy. This happened 100 years ago, and it's happening again. Give this a read! #po...

#fedihelp #question So, here's something weird: I have a second account on a different instance where I saw a cool post that I would really like to boost with this account here (on kolektiva.social). So, as always, I copied the post URL and put it in the search on kolektiva.social. Nothing. Next I tried with the username of the post author, still nothing. Then I manually typed in the URL for visiting that user's profile from kolektiva, which did take me to the profile, but sh...

@bloodravenlib Ah, the Onion, as always hitting it right on the head. ❤️ With a hammer they probably got at Walgreens.

@natania Well, you have to admit that it does help getting to know them? 😬

@jwildeboer I mean, I'm just not going to justify myself to anybody for wearing a mask - in contrast to their NOT wearing one, my mask-wearing impacts nobody else that isn't trying to talk to me while deaf or hard of hearing. So my response is "What do you care?"

@breadandcircuses That car is an obcenity. 🤮 Sadly, this is how electric cars are marketed and politicians are not exactly trying to change that.

@amaditalks Wow, this is the worst! ☹️ I feel pretty safe with my well-fitting FFP3 mask usually (and haven't gotten infected yet), but the issue is that in medical settings, you often have to remove the mask for treatment or tests! And medical settings are full of vulnerable people. There's absolutely no justification for removing mask mandates in hospitals and the like. Even with mask mandates still in place, it's boggled my mind how many medical professionals do not w...

@amaditalks Right?! As the name indicates, going to the ER - or other medical appointments, for that matter - is rarely optional or for the fun of it. I also try holding my breath when I briefly remove the mask. At least you're not actively breathing in aerosols, right? Has to to something...
