New on the blog: How Firefox renders web components. Specs say what should happen but I wanted to learn what a browser engine actually does. I followed a custom element through Gecko's source, from the registry to the reactions stack to the flattened tree Stylo styles. Every step is a figure you can step through and replay. (I even animated the diagrams to help demonstrate the flow of data through the systems!) https://castastrophe.blog/guides/gecko-web-components-rendering/ #WebComp...

Got an e-mail this morning for one of my classes where a student let me know they wouldn't take the test today because they didn't feel ready and would take it at another time…not asking mind you. Telling me. (The answer was of course no and please let me know when you're struggling in advance.) Not something I ever could have fathomed doing when I was in college. Kudos for moxy I guess!

I've been working on a status page for the CSS Working Group and it's finally in a shareable state: https://allons-y.studio/tools/csswg/. Please send me feedback on the format and styles, it's very beta yet. I'm doing a weekly data collection from GitHub and searching/organizing that data into useful groups and categorizations. My goal is to make it easier to engage with the group or at least track topic progress over time. 🤓💜 #css #w3c #DataNerd

I really enjoyed crafting this guide; what started as curiosity and a love of web components grew into deep learning on how engines created this experience. I'm eager to dive into another topic in this way and would love to hear from you! - What did you like about the guide? - What topics are you interested in seeing broken down in this way? - What would you want done differently? https://front-end.social/@castastrophe/117361376921766863

@nolan asks whether web components have a future if nobody is writing them, and part of his case cites the custom elements section of Chrome's Modern Web Guidance. 👋 Since I wrote that section, I thought I'd add to the conversation. #WebComponents https://castastrophe.blog/blog/on-writing-the-custom-elements-section-for-modern-web-guidance/ https://toot.cafe/@nolan/117470449984835742

Feeling way more existential than a Wednesday calls for. Existentialism is for weekends. Don't try to tell that to my brain though. Sigh. 😮💨

Y’all big updates to one of my PostCSS plugins! postcss-custom-prop-sorting v4.0.0 is out (https://github.com/castastrophe/postcss-custom-prop-sorting/releases/tag/v4.0.0). Sort your custom properties by dependency order, so –-color-base always lands before anything that var()s off it. New in v4: • Warns on circular dependencies • Traces the full var() fallback chain • Ships with type declarations • 100% ESM

New branding? Who dat? The Allons-y Studio site got a full refresh yesterday, complete with new branding, clearer messaging, and more emphasis on design systems, web components, and accessibility. Poke around: https://allons-y.studio/ Coming soon: a deep-dive into how web components are implemented in Gecko; custom elements and shadow DOM from the engine's side of the glass. #WebComponents #DesignSystems

It's not official yet but there's a strong likelihood I will be teaching 2 courses at my alma mater, Meredith College, this semester! Web programming with databases and an intro to Python. Being a professor has been on my bucket list since before I can remember. 🫶🤞

Curious what is the experience of others in #getfedihired: I am a well-qualified engineer with a good reputation in several communities, a public speaker, leader at enterprise-level companies. I am also openly AuDHD. None of my applications since January are getting through to recruiters (as far as I can tell). Has anyone else noticed this change? I had several interviews last year but everything went silent recently. (1/2)

😂 oh no. I read a post by a young autistic person I follow on instagram and was proud of him as if he's my son. When did I stop being "me too friend" and become "yes my sweet baby child you are amazing"?! 💜

I'm not entirely sure I play video games right. <she says while building a json data set for the resources with categories for method (digging, foraging, mining) and location> Next I'll be testing to see if I can get Claude to correctly identify sprite images in a backpack and create collection lists consistently...will open source the skill if it works with any amount of regularity.

My god, I don't expect my furniture to resist a knife attack. Also, love that AI interpreted "wear-resistant" to mean violence and (theoretically,) someone saw this and went, "hell yeah, that goes in the ad!"

Oo some possible shorthands being proposed for defining custom properties: https://github.com/w3c/csswg-drafts/issues/7523 What I love about this thread is the innovative and creative suggestions on how to improve the usage of this feature; a feature that is really quite new itself! Keep engaging friends. Happy Friday! #css
