Re: that last boost, what people sometimes forget is that in the UK we have the legal right to go missing. It's not a crime to fuck off out of a bad life situation, though an awful lot of people do it because other people's crimes have gone undealt with. This org's valuable work is germane here: https://www.missingpeople.org.uk/ We have to be careful of how the more heart-rending use cases for this app will be used to justify really sinister overreach in other contexts.

While opening Google Maps for something else, accidentally fell into the Southwest of England and reinvigorated my tiny hobby of enjoying English placenames. Today: Upper Slaughter and Lower Slaughter (it would feel unbalanced to have just one). But I also discovered Notgrove, which made me wonder how far it was from the nearest Grove, and whether it had been named in a fit of pique... 1/-

Britain doesn't really make sense as a country until you understand that nobody in power really gives a fuck about disabled people. https://www.theguardian.com/business/2024/dec/22/banks-scrapping-of-trust-accounts-cuts-lifeline-for-disabled-people-say-charities

@sarahdal It's deeply sad that this is a thing LiveJournal used to do well, but it was never mainstream and it's hard to think of a platform that is: Facebook worked, when it worked, because it got buy-in from a large cross-section of society. Or you flail around and come up with things like Reddit that don't have the "personal profile you can update" aspect, and have problems of their own besides.

@sarahdal Yes, I looked into why that level of customisation stopped being the norm on social media, and it seems to be rooted first in the response to the Samy worm which hit MySpace at a time when they basically had no security infrastructure, and then subsequently in the kinds of decision-making that took over as - I can't help noticing - social media stopped being for the extremely online and became everyone and their mother (well, except my mother): https://tedium.co/2020/07/14/soci...

@sarahdal Over on Discord I've been talking to friends about this from another angle - we were lamenting how you can have WordPress for old-school blogging, but community, finding other good content to read and comments don't come bundled with it, which naturally led us to LJ nostalgia. People mentioned a couple of federated Tumblr-esque projects (e.g. https://goblin.band/) but what I think we really need is a federated NeoCities that takes off at a BluSky-esque scale...

@johnzajac I'm guessing they can use people whose conditions force a very low sodium diet as comparators, and maybe people who are cooking from scratch a lot with low-sodium alternatives for flavour. But the WHO do say the majority of the world is eating more than their guideline. Their evidence base for that is here: https://iris.who.int/bitstream/handle/10665/77985/9789241504836_eng.pdf?sequence=1

Re: that last boost on health supremacism, if you've already read as many articles as Medium allows you this month, you can also see the article where it originally appeared, here: https://indoxicate.me/dont-be-a-health-supremacist/ It's an important one to me and one I'm grateful to have been directed to, because I've had to deal with this mentality in my personal life as well as *gestures wildly* in politics in general, and Iive been dealing with further outwork...

Today, Saturday 28th February, is the final day of QueerAF's crowdfunder. QueerAF is a groundbreaking LGBTQIA+-run journalism outlet that consistently breaks stories that play into the UK's national conversation - one dominated, in the mainstream media, by newspapers deeply hostile to us as a community and particularly to trans people. They're just 14% away from hitting their final target, and there are rewards. Please share! #LGBTQIA https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/quee...
