Finished reading: The Memory of Old Jack by Wendell Berry 📚 "“Don’t you want to go in there and watch the TV?” Mrs. Hendrick asks. He shakes his head. “No,” he thinks. “God Amighty, no.” For the cost of living beyond his time is in putting up with the various noises and contraptions of these new times, this modern ignorance, as he has come to call it in his mind. The modern ignorance is in people’s assumption that they can outsmart their own nature. It is in the arrogance that will believ...

My (9 and 12 yr old) sons were just in the backyard playing a game they call “lawyer karate,” the rules of which are somewhat opaque to me, but involve hand-to-hand combat while wearing suit jackets and ties, and yelling at each other about taxes. When they came inside, I asked if they were done, and the... bethanyh.net

My daughter is at an intensive “pre-college art lab” for high schoolers right now, and I am loving seeing all the work she texts me photos of. Here are some samples of some screenprint work she’s done the past couple days!

Slowly outfitting the new house with furniture, mostly sourced secondhand. Trying to find the balance between “we need somewhere to sit right now” and not buying something disposable that doesn’t actually suit our needs/style. It’s a slow process, but an enjoyable one.

My Kindle has been increasingly sluggish, so in a desire to untether myself where I can from the Amazon ecosystem, I bought a Kobo to replace it. We’ll see how I like it, but so far, so good. I appreciate the Overdrive integration on the Kobo itself, vs. having to go through the Libby app followed by the... bethanyh.net

I appreciated this anecdote from Lauren Rioux, on undertaking a new hobby/skill as an adult: "At the time of this story, I was around twenty-five ish years old, had graduated college with degrees in music, and been focusing four hours a day for two years on fiddling, all while teaching a full studio and gigging. I was trying to catch up to all my peers who had been attending fiddle camps since they were kids. In a lesson, Darol made some kind of passing remark that I was making good progr...

10 yr old to his best bud: If only one of us was a weird kid and the other one was a normal kid, I think we would still be friends, we just wouldn’t be best friends. Me: Are you saying you’re both weird kids? Friend: Oh, yes! Me: So if you were both “normal kids,” would you still be friends? 10 yr old: Hm,... bethanyh.net

Finished watching: Wild Rose 🎥 Loved this movie. I thought about rolling straight into Hamnet, since I was already crying over a Jessie Buckley performance, but decided to space out the emotional damage.
