Functionalism John Searle proposed a definition of "Strong AI" in 1980. "The appropriately programmed computer really is a mind, in the sense that computers given the right programs can be literally said to understand and have other cognitive states." He refined it over the years, and was, I think, eventually satisfied with equating it with functionalism - that is, the thesis that each and every mental state is constituted solely by its functional role. h...

Programming is theory building "Programming is theory building more than ever. The distance from a conception of how the world can be to some new reality is so much shorter with agents! We still need to understand what we want, and conceptually how it can work, and how we’ll get there. That is still the hard part, and we get to work ever harder on it." https://jessitron.com/2026/10/13/sharing-theories-with-agents/ #AI #SoftwareEngineering

RE: https://mas.to/@kctipton/117478225951352666 I wonder how this works? Does it shout, "What's that behind you!?" and slip an extra knight onto the board when the opponent looks? Ruy Lopez used to recommend turning the board so the sun was in the opponent's eyes, but I'm not sure if that counts as cheating. #chess #ai

I think we're good on articles about the problems with AI now. Time for some good articles on the solutions! #ai

It's not good enough to just say everyone should stop using AI because reasons. It makes a lot of people's lives easier. I think everyone should stop using cars because reasons, but people won't unless a good alternative is available. We need fewer highways and more high-speed rail. We need fewer systems that can be gamed by using AI and more that reward human endeavor. #ai

What can the higher education sector learn from the music industry about AI? "We may see a much clearer distinction between mass education (flexible, scalable, AI-rich and relatively inexpensive); premium education (deliberately human-intensive and experiential), and prestige education (where selectivity, reputation, networks and signalling remain part of what is being purchased)." I still wonder what the value of a degree will be though. https://wonkhe.com/blogs/what-can-th...

The real energy use of agentic AI "My personal and professional AI usage now emits a bit more per year than running an electric clothes dryer, and about half as much as driving an electric car 11,500 miles in California or taking one San Francisco to New York round-trip flight in economy. It is about 8% of the annual emissions of a typical American gasoline car, and roughly 2% of the average American’s ~18-ton annual greenhouse gas footprint." https://www.theclimatebrink.com/p/the-re...

RE: https://vmst.io/@jalefkowit/116132495960224943 I wonder if this involves Prisoner's Dilemma strategy. If you only play a single round, defecting is always the correct strategy. Cooperation only becomes a useful tactic if you know you will be playing the opponent again another time. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prisoner's_dilemma #ai #GameTheory
