Calling these incidents “rogue AI” lends them a “sci-fi veneer,” Hamiel says. It suggests the bots themselves are to blame, or that they have become too smart to control. The more immediate problem, he says, is that people are giving AI agents too much reach with too little oversight. https://www.sciencenews.org/article/rogue-ai-agents-human-blame-safety

In desperation, scientists turn to OnlyFans for funding. But it's not Hot Scientist Feet. No. It's HOT MARMOT SUMMER. OnlyMarms. It makes me both sad for the state of funding, and also...I mean good on ya, that is creative thinking! https://www.sfgate.com/national-parks/article/marmot-researchers-make-onlyfans-22357723.php

We often talk about gambling in terms of disease and addiction, and it can be an addiction. But this? This? I think I feel pretty ok calling this kind of betting straight up evil. https://www.hcn.org/articles/people-are-betting-on-wildfires-should-they/

This news breaks my heart. SciAm being sold and a PILE of great editors getting fired. The Sciam editorial team is one of the best I've had the pleasure to work with. Smart, incisive, they make every piece better and I'm so proud to have worked with them. https://group.springernature.com/gp/group/media/press-releases/divestment-consumer-media/52799204

I've a whale of a tale to tell you lads. A whale of a tale or two. About the bowhead whales that moved behind thick areas of sea ice whaling vessels couldn't penetrate and which scientists learned about by studying logbooks from 700 whaling voyages. https://www.nationalgeographic.com/animals/article/bowhead-whale-migration-arctic-sea-ice

Did you know that bowhead whales are as long as a 4.5 story building is tall. And also they are 1/3 mouth (we really don't talk about that enough) and ALSO that some populations recovered form whaling because the HID behind sea ice! https://www.nationalgeographic.com/animals/article/bowhead-whale-migration-arctic-sea-ice

When you eat a plant, have you ever thought how much TIME you're eating? How much time a carrot took to grow, and you just munch it down in 30 minutes? It's wild, how fast we eat time. https://brookshire-team-trash.beehiiv.com/p/on-eating-time
