The same guy who was caught fixing the price of bread for years now claims that the big grocers have no control over prices. Give me a break. Canadians aren’t stupid. We see Galen getting richer and richer as grocery costs skyrocket. We know we’re being ripped off. It’s time to break up the Big Grocery Cartel and drive down costs with a national network of public grocery stores that Canadians can actually afford to shop at. #cdnpoli #canada #loblaws #groceries

The American CEO who bought Stelco is openly admitting that he purchased the company to sabotage it. This is why the Liberals should have never approved Stelco's sale in the first place. When you give away ownership of a critical industry like steel, your economy is forever under another's thumb. There is only one solution that will save these jobs and put Canada back in the driver's seat: we need to nationalize Stelco. #canada #cdnpoli #stelco #NDP

A huge congratulations to Olivia Chow and the incredible slate of progressive councillors elected in Toronto tonight. This win goes beyond any one person or campaign — it’s the result of years of movements organizing together, from tenant unions to climate activists, migrant rights advocates and those on the front lines of harm reduction. You mobilized and knocked on every last door to make this happen. Tonight, you’ve secured a better future for Toronto together. #canada #toronto

This is private equity, this is what it does. Buy up businesses, run them into the ground, and rip them apart for short-term profit. The developers at BioWare know how to run the studio. They know how to make the games we all love. They should be given the first opportunity - and the federal support - to buy it and run it themselves. And if we want to avoid the Mass Effect effect in Canada, we should be keeping private equity out, not welcoming it in. https://www.pcgamer.com/gaming-industr...

1/ I’m hearing from friends in Alberta that today is actually hitting folks pretty hard. Not the vote to remain, which was a relief, but the other 9 questions. It’s becoming clear that the feeling of unity suggested by the referendum result is undercut by majority support for questions which feature policies that scapegoat migrants. But no amount of punching down by Danielle Smith will fix Alberta’s health care, public education or cost-of-living crises. These are the consequences of years of...

It should be illegal for Israel’s top arms producer to purchase a Canadian company. Elbit Systems is complicit in the genocide of Palestinians. People are getting gouged at the pumps, but another costly handout of public money to oil and gas companies is no solution. Even after the Carney government’s $2.4 billion giveaway, gas prices continue to soar. In July, they were up more than 25% compared to last year. Instead of more corporate welfare, it’s time for a windfall tax on the big oil giants that are set to make $100 billion in profits this year because of Trump’s illegal war in Iran. Doing so will generate billions in new revenue...

The Liberals and Conservatives just voted together to attack labour, environmental, and Indigenous rights to fast-track corporate mega projects. This is the exact same approach the Liberals fought under Stephen Harper. Now, they're bringing back that very same agenda and Harper is cheering from the sidelines. We don’t save Canada by sacrificing our environment and constitutional protections on the altar of private profits. Bill C-39 is an unmitigated disaster, and Canadians will be fightin...

Throwing billions in public money behind a pipeline at a time of climate breakdown – while sweeping aside environmental protections, meaningful Indigenous consultation and workers’ right to strike – is absolutely not in the national interest. This is just another gift to an oil industry already on track to make $100 billion in wartime profits this year alone. We pay, we take on the risk, and they reap the rewards. #canada #cdnpoli #pipeline

1/ Today, on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, people across Canada are gathering in remembrance and renewed determination to ensure ours is a country where every child matters. As the late Honourable Murray Sinclair reminded us, “there can be no reconciliation without truth.” But today, the bravely, painfully told truth of residential schools has become a primary target for hate movements, as we saw on the Tk'emlúps te Secwépemc reserve. So it’s more important than ever for...

Tonight Yom Kippur begins, the most sombre moment of the Jewish calendar. It’s a time of atonement - a time to grieve those who have been lost, a time to acknowledge and take responsibility for harms we have caused, individually and collectively. For Jewish people, the personal has always been political and the political always personal. This year I'm reflecting on the fact that we failed to do our part to stop an ongoing genocide committed in our name. There are many other fronts where I ha...

The profit-taking for Wall St and Bay St begins immediately! Billable hours already piling up as big banks will skim millions off the sale itself. There's a reason previous Liberal governments looked at privatizing airports and didn't go through with it. Private investors don't want a stake in our public assets to make them better. They’re in it to make as much money as possible for themselves - while workers and passengers pay the price. #cdnpoli #canada #airports #NDP

1/ Privatizing airports is a terrible deal for travellers, workers, and the public purse. Around the world, it has led to higher travel costs, fewer jobs and worse working conditions. Private equity moguls and fund managers love it! Once they’re in, they own a piece of a natural monopoly, and they print money for decades. This is a mistake we do not need to make. The alternative to privatizing our airports is to NOT DO IT. https://www.theglobeandmail.com/politics/article-ottawa-to-announc...

This is the government of Canada’s scientific finding. It is true. It is also a terrible message. Here’s what’s also true: Every tenth of a degree of global warming matters. Every fraction of temperature rise we avoid saves lives, reduces disease, food and water shortages, disasters. That means: Every wind turbine and solar panel deployed Every heat pump installed Every energy efficiency retrofit Every electric bus and vehicle Every job created from all these things… It all matters! Tonight we mourn the loss of a remarkable leader. Joan Phillip was utterly devoted to making life better — for her neighbours in Vancouver-Strathcona, for Indigenous youth, and for working people across the province. She spent a lifetime at the front of the fight for justice. Now, it is up to all of us to carry her powerful legacy forward. I’m sending strength to her partner, Grand Chief Stewart Phillip, her family, and everyone whose life was richer with Joan in it. #canada #cdnpoli #bcpoli

I’m thinking about the thousands of people in the Summerland area who are facing the nightmare of having to leave their homes because of wildfires. We're also seeing incredible courage from firefighters and first responders who are putting themselves on the line to protect the people and places we love. They have our deep gratitude. B.C. has now declared a state of emergency. If you’re in the province, see https://www.emergencyinfobc.gov.bc.ca/ for the latest updates. #canada #britishColu...

1/ As I received this news today here in British Columbia, the wildfire smoke blankets the sky, our eyes are burning and our kid is complaining of a sore throat from it. And we’re the lucky ones. Over the weekend, more than 5,000 British Columbians had to flee their homes in 24 hours, under evacuation from just two of the approximately 130 wildfires currently engulfing the province. https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/carney-moves-to-list-alberta-pipeline-national-interest-9.7295932 #canada #cdnp...

This is the third time in six months that Benjamin Netanyahu has flown through Canadian airspace. Contrary to the GAC spokesperson’s claim, he does not have the freedom to make that decision. Foreign leaders are required to seek permission before doing so. Netanyahu is also wanted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes. As a member of the ICC, Canada has a duty to arrest him if he enters the country. Has the government been knowingly shirking its responsibility and allowing a w...

In this photograph, PM Mark Carney is touring the Government Operations Centre - the nerve centre that leads the “integrated federal response to all-hazard events of a national interest.” The workforce there has been cut in half thanks to Carney’s public service cuts, from 100 to just 50 workers. In other words, to advance major projects “in the national interest” (like pipelines and military hardware), the PM has slashed the number of public sector workers who coordinate the response to emerg...

1/ Bravo à la mairesse Chow pour avoir pris des mesures visant à protéger les habitant·e·s de Toronto contre la tarification abusive liée à la surveillance. Bravo Mayor Chow for taking action to protect Toronto residents from surveillance pricing. It’s time to end this predatory practice before it becomes normalized - yet another daily digital injustice. So far, the Carney government has promised vague action in the future, from a new agency that doesn’t even exist yet. Instead, we need a national ban on surveillance pricing right now. That’s what Premier Wab Kinew has done in Manitoba, what NDP premiers in waiting like Marit Stiles and Claudi...

This contract is clearly designed to enable both Trump's mass deportation campaign, and his move to use ICE to manipulate the midterm elections. But it’s also a reminder of how deeply entwined Canada's elites are with US corporate and government interests. If the Carney government is serious about Canadian economic independence, it should move to block this contract immediately, with new legislation if necessary. Collaboration between Canadian corporations and ICE should be illegal....

Wildfires are getting more and more devastating because of global warming, which is primarily caused by the burning of fossil fuels. Trump won’t say that because he’s in the industry’s pocket. If he wants compensation for the wildfire smoke, he should go after the oil and gas giants responsible. #canada #cdnpoli #trump #wildfires
