Hey, statistics question for people who know about data science---I have a few thousand .csv rows. Each one has a timestamp, a speaker ID, the speaker's province, and some quantitative data. If I want to test for patterns in each of those data, over time and between provinces, I'm using a mixed-effects model, right? Will a linear ME model be enough, or (assuming there are dips and swells in the data, not just a linear progression) do I need something else?

Can someone explain the moral of the "Hole in my Bucket?" song to me? I'm simply incapable of figuring it out myself! (and I've discovered that if I just nag people enough they'll do the hard work for me.)

This is your friendly reminder that America believes in democracy, and that's why the system for electing the president allows someone to win (outright, no disloyal electors) with about 25% of the popular vote. There's no perfect election system, but PLEASE this is such a simple thing to fix---

I just realized that Facebook renaming itself to Meta means that GAFA (Google Apple Facebook Amazon)… is now MAGA. A spoonful of poetic justice makes the totalitarian monopolism go down in the most delightful way?

Everyone knows that Shakespeare is our first written record for thousands and thousands of common words (“undress”, “bedroom”, “kissing”, “critic”, “laughingstock”, “cold comfort”, etc), but few know he also originated the modern usages of both 💀 and 🤡…

This is everyone's friendly reminder that the CBC has a Lite version! It's designed for people in low-bandwidth areas, which has the delightful side effect of it not having ads (or pre-load ad auctions), trackers, or whatever new design choice the designers think will get clicks. It's very nice to just have text and a wee bit of CSS. cbc.ca/lite
