@azizhp@mastodon.social it's a misconception. If you call a linked list with cryptographic hashes a block chain it uses one i guess but that's silly. It's just a merkle tree, there's no currency, there's no "proof of work" or mining or anything.

@Thapsyrensays @eosfpodcast I agree about clubhouse, especially how awful the vc and crypto vibes were there. Bluesky does have a large population of crypto adjacent people but not nearly as much as clubhouse did and they're not the majority. Also agree about the tendency to artificially generated hype using invite code scarcity but in this case I think it was organic and was an unexpected surge in users causing them to throttle invite issuance until they could handle the larger us...

@azizhp@mastodon.social no problem! i hate the cryptocurrency types so wanted to clarify! It's true that it uses libraries and techniques that were developed for cryptocurrencies though so the confusion is understandable!

@JoshPaul not a fan of musk either but unfortunately it’s the platform that has the most impact. Would encourage you to consider creating an account there.

@tristanbuckmaster doesn’t make it acceptable even without but any idea if you were using an account with a Zero Data Retention policy or opted out from including in training in settings?

@devr @tristanbuckmaster it would still be unethical by math standards to use the platforms advantage to try and scoop people who use your platform. Like if someone who hosted sage math used insights derived from you computations to scoop you.

Essentially what OpenAI is doing here (and Anthropic to a less egregious extent) is pillaging the commons without contributing back to it.

@devr @tristanbuckmaster if that’s the case it wasn’t designed maliciously to target Alpoge and Buckmaster (or even mathematicians) but it’s still a factor in making their actions more of an academic scandal. E.g. if sage math disclosed it uses user data in their own research but then committed vast amount of money to try and scoop their users lol.
