okay, i think i like @dansup@mastodon.social's new mastodon client: it basically takes what works well about mastodon and refines it rather than ... whatever the Mastodon 5.0 design is.

why does Canada regulate weed the way they do, like a pack of 4 gummies labeled 10mg implies to me 4x10mg not 4x2.5mg

RE: https://sfba.social/@drahardja/117341398329826875 from a climate perspective, a moratorium on commercial AI is *very* important because they are burning fossil fuels *on site* at these datacenters because the grid cannot deliver enough energy.

my thoughts on Aachen so far: as soon as we got off the train we saw border police checking passports of brown people, it took over an hour to find a restaurant that both myself and my fiancé found acceptable (e.g. was not unhealthy fried food and also open), there was a store unironically selling DSL in 20 fucking 26 like it was a good thing and our hotel room has a fucking IoT smart lock with a fucking PIN code on it. also, weed here got legalized in the most useless way possible. ragequitti...

https://theshamblog.com/an-ai-agent-published-a-hit-piece-on-me/ As a free software maintainer, this is entirely unacceptable. Now I have to spend time figuring out how to tell AI agents to *fuck off* so I don't have to deal with this.

RE: https://social.treehouse.systems/@ariadne/117270693101928179 i took a few minutes to quickly read through the essay dario amodei (CEO of anthropic) dropped over the weekend. my takeaway from it is that "pacing the frontier" is more likely a convenient narrative for a problem the frontier labs are inevitably going to run into anyway: as these monolithic models scale, the physical and economic difficulty of scaling them grows with them.

anyway, i've had a few people ask for my take on dario amodei's "we must pace the frontier" essay, so i am going to give it a quick read and then write a rebuttal

outside of the political argument, the reason why i am opposed to GenAI in the commons is because dependency effectively serves to *freeze* the commons as it is today models are effectively a lossy encoding of the present this has the advantage that it could, perhaps, raise an inexperienced person's output to that of the median level of expertise in their field *but* it will not let either the person, or the commons itself, grow this is why i hope that the end state is that GenAI is not...
