@neil If I ever needed to implement some kind of verification I'd probably look at using Yivi (https://yivi.app/). Bit limited to NL still I believe, but at least that would allow me to ask "are you over 18" without processing any additional information. It's a cool project, and I'm kinda sad that it's not getting more traction.

@neil I also love how there's this really extensive page talking about GDPR obligations (from an LLM, no doubt) but we've just… completely forgotten that article 14 exists?

@neil Not in England or Wales, so I won't vote, but… Here in NL we've had so many inactionable alerts and given that I can apparently only turn them on or off, not change the volume/sound or anything, I've got them off now and I rely on the app instead. I don't really need to be woken up just to be told not to call emergency services except in an emergency.

When I was 20, I was lucky enough to get my driving license and my first car. I remember how before then I would happily and proudly get anywhere I needed to go with public transport. It wasn't always perfect, but I hardly ever had trouble with it either. Then I got the car and I started using it more and more. And over time, it started to change the way I think. Away from where stations and bus stops were, over to where I could feasibly park and where there would be traffic. Nowaways, I h...

@neil Isn't that just the question of ethical consumption under capitalism again? A lot of these things are choices you make because the alternative is harder / worse somehow. It's infinitely more important to try and make the "better" choices more accessible for everyone than to focus on which choices you make personally.

I've had my WinRAR purse for over a year now, and only once did someone recognise what it was before being told, and it was an usher at Beetlejuice the musical.

Honestly kind of impressed. Got a phishing message on Thursday pretending to be a login notification from my bank, listing a phone number to call. Looked up the provider and contacted their fraud department. Today, I got a response telling me the phone number was cancelled. They'll probably pop right back up with a new one, but if it saves just one person from getting scammed, it still seems worth it.

@neil Slight correction: whether resident or not, the private key is derived from the key material that lives inside the security key (Yubikey). The difference is that with a resident key, the information needed to derive the key is stored in the hardware too. With non-resident, that bit of metadata lives in the private key file. It's not actually a private key in there.

Had an IKEA practically next door for years but today is the first time I tried their automated pick up thing. It's excellent. You go there, enter a code and after a while a door opens with your loaded cart on it.
