I feel like I’m slowly closing in on what I want to build in a live coding environment: some sort of mechanism for calling editor-level effects separate from code effects. For example, in Strudel, you can call the `_pianoroll` function and embed a piano roll visualization in the code editor that shows the live values of a given pattern. In principle, these sorts of effects should be “erasable.” That is, if you’re running this code outside of a live editor, then it shouldn’t have any impact on t...

@tristanC Oh, that’s cool! I’ve not played with effects in Haskell, and this is definitely part of the picture, especially if you wanted to let multiple editors swap in their own implementations of the same feedback features The more ambitious part: how do I split the type system into two “levels”? A Tidal function doesn’t care if the pattern it consumes has editor highlights, and it would be nice to not be carrying around effect monads everywhere. However, there is a meta level where a functio...

@froos Yes! I’m definitely inspired by what the Hazel team is working on. The prospect of a system that can interpret and run incomplete code is super interesting for live coding The thing I’ve been wrestling with right now is that it’s so nice to evaluate code at a specific time (like dropping a beat), so it would be cool if some code updates happen continuously while you could choose for other updates to be held until they’re explicitly triggered

In a wild coincidence, the same day I pick up a copy of @ingrid’s great _Networks of New York_, the construction project next door severs my cable connection. Fortunately, the previous owner of my house ran way too many cables, so I found a redundant one to connect to. I’m ready to take a break from the material conditions of the Internet for a bit though

Making some pixel art for an event poster. I will never not love an ordered dither matrix
