I got my daughter a MacBook Neo, her first experience with Mac, and I'm amazed at how bad Apple UX can be, given the enthusiasm of their adherents. A specific example: She was trying to enter her DOB. First I suggested if she clicked on the year it might bring up a year picker. Nope. Then I pointed out she could type the year into the field, so she started typing. 2... now the picker jumped back to the year 2 CE. 0... now to 0 CE... what? 0 again, then 8. 8 CE. You need to type faster....

Not to be pedantic... okay, definitely to be pedantic: Stop calling it "The Fourth of July" 'cause it's on the 3rd this year (and other years, and sometimes on the 5th). Say it with me, "Independence Day." Now doesn't that feel more truthy?

I get why it's good that someone with training, a weapon, and good intent was on the scene. But the death of the perpetrator is not the ideal outcome here, justice is, and help for the mentally ill. And yes, I recognize that this perpetrator died at their own hands and that their guilt was obvious. We don't need more guns. We do need better training. And we need better care and better education. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/aug/03/in-n-out-shooting-idaho

Running LLMs on your own hardware in your basement today is pretty much like running Linux on your PC was in the "good ol' days" (you know, when audio never worked... okay it still doesn't always work, but if you're old enough you know what I mean). I'm sure a decade from now it'll be more mainstream, but stop pretending it's easy and everyone else is a fool for not doing it.

Claude Code was writing a file with cat and a heredoc. Investigating why leads me to this unbelievable nonsense: "While auto mode is active: Do your work through the Bash tool wherever it can accomplish the job: read files with cat, head, or sed -n, search with grep and find, and make file changes with sed, heredocs, or short scripts, rather than using the dedicated Read, Edit, or Write tools. Fall back to a dedicated tool only when Bash genuinely cannot do the job." No expl...
