#WritersCoffeeClub 10/16. How do you feel about people reading your works without buying a personal copy? I like libraries. #writing #writingCommunity

#ScribesAndMakers 10/16. Do you feel you do your best creative work completely solitary, working collaboratively with one or more people, or working near but not with other people? While I have successfully written in a packed train carriage filled with drunk football supporters, I prefer absolute aloneness. #writing #writingCommunity

#WritersCoffeeClub 10/17. What are the defining traits of your niche in your genre? My genre? What even is that? Let alone a niche in it. I write all the things (except horror). #writing #writingCommunity

Ask people to choose which word they think is the best fit. Not synonyms, not a single word to replace. She had never found any treasure, not gold or silver, no gems, no jewellery beyond the ______ she now wore though that was not an ancient relic. #WritersCoffeeClub 8/24. Talk about a time you realised something about a writer through their works. Yeah, so when I was young I loved a series of books written by Hugh Walton, they were British SF with plucky kids being astronauts. There was even a pair of telepathic identical twin sisters in one book. In 2021 I re-read them, and it kinda started okay. They were scientifically accurate for what was believed at the time Then I hit the book with the telepaths and that was fine. Then for the f...

#WritersCoffeeClub 7/15. Do you read a lot outside of your comfort zone? I have a few things I won't read (horror, for example) but beyond that I'll read most things, though often as research - like lots of romance before writing romance. #writing #writingCommunity

#ScribesAndMakers 7/13. Has a bear ever featured in your work? If so, what sort of bear? I can be fairly confident in saying I have never written a bear into a story. Odd in some ways because I like bears. They've just never come up. #writing #writingCommunity

#ScribesAndMakers 6/27. What's your favorite woodwind? It's a toss up between the oboe and clarinet (which I learned to play once upon a time). It is said of the oboe "it's an ill wind that nobody blows good", which can be true but when it's right it is perfect. #writing #writingCommunity

#ScribesAndMakers 5/7. When did you think of the idea for your current project? Do you remember how it came about? So we (my wife and I) are booked to trade at a steampunk event on June 6th/7th. My wife said, late March this year, "the theme for the event is pirates and mermaids, we could write books". So I said "That's a good idea." The file was opened March 25th and the writing completed at 30K words on May 4th. And I'm now working on the clean-ups. Coming soo...

#WritersCoffeeClub 5/7. Do readers need to understand a character's motivations to understand the story? I mean, superficially, I suppose they might get away with not for the simplest stories. But generally, yes. Of course! #writing #writingCommunity

OK, I have completed the "echo words" pass on the WIP. Cancelled my subscription to NaturalVoices - because they've gone 100% AI and were expensive (just in time, renewal was on the 10th) Now have a local text-to-speech solution on my Linux machine with a sexy male Scottish voice 😄 Excellent. My new computer arrives tomorrow and I should have it up and running by the time I need to create the cover elements for my designer. It's all go. #amEditing

#ScribesAndMakers 5/6. Ghoti (fish) is a word created to demonstrate the odd pronunciation variations in the English language. Create a word of your own or share one you've created. So many. In the Patterners' World there are entire classes of creatures with "ancient names": kichek (ridable lizard thing), sikechak (bat like, comes in sizes up to f-ing enormous), nachak (like T-Rex), tekrak (rocket-propelled flying cabbage - no, really), xililik (nobody knows, used as an insul...

#WritersCoffeeClub 5/6. Talk about something you've written which you expected would (_or expect will_) divide readers. Better than that, I'll give you something that absolutely does divide readers. "Wind in the East", the fourth book of the Maliha Anderson series, has a scene where she has herself strung up naked and insists her boyfriend whip her. Writing the scene wiped me out emotionally for two weeks, but it wasn't some random perversion. She had a very specific rea...

#WritersCoffeeClub 5/5. Have you ever taken inspiration from something which could have but didn't happen? Yes? Kinda? The Great War could have started April 1911, due to the Agadir Crisis where Germany tried to provoke France. In my steampunk world, it happens. Except I've never written about it. #writing #writingCommunity
