@lucashendren I'm an outsider, so I don't know that I have insight. I just created this map as a way to visualize some places where something could emerge. But even with transformers we're seeing coupling them with scaffolding for long horizon memory and structured schema (via knowledge graphs) in highly verifiable domains is unlocking performance gains. I imagine we're still exploring how useful that can be. There are also clearly many narrow use cases for trans...

Repeatedly called language models “Grandpa Shelby” on my podcast The Last Enclosure. What the hell do I mean? It's a clunky metaphor from my first blog post on LLMs @ Misaligned Markets. Breaks into three parts: 1. Anterograde amnesia (Leonard Shelby from Christopher Nolan’s Memento, no memory beyond the moment) 2. Savantism (via capturing high level regularities use plus reasoning traces in language) 3. Dementia (unreliable retrieval of associations formed in training) #AI #LLM #te...

RE: https://mamot.fr/@pluralistic/116997210062423037 1/ Great post by @pluralistic. Great timing too. I just released episode 6 of my podcast The Last Enclosure where I talk about people like Doctorow who are trying to provide an escape valve for hype by scoping LLMs (though I did openly question the spell checker use case because of tokenization/non-determinism).

Like comptuer networks, markets are a trust technology that require well established trust boundaries. The recent DOJ egg collusion complaint shows that collusion can happen, not just when producers get together, but when they "hack" an interface the market uses to coordinate activity. In this case, the prodcuers coordinated to spoof activity to fool a market monitor. https://misaligned.markets/bad-eggs-market-collusion/ #economics #capitalism #antitrust #monopoly #economy...

Just launched my second podcast! Unlike The Last Enclosure he Misaligned Markets podcast will highlight the work of scholars and activists addressing contemporary economic issues. First episode features my first political econ professor, who started me on this path. I have an interesting list of guests planned for my podcast, but I'm always looking for more! Feel free to send recommendations if you know anyone who'd be interested in joining a political economy podcast. https://...

@benlockwood@ecoevo.social market economies are a wicked problem politicians treat as an engineering problem. Until that changes any runaway consequences will remain unaddressed.

(1/12) The 'AI bubble' is a political economy story I've spent over 20k words unraveling. LLMs aren't just a technology; they're a mirror of the same delusions that drive market fundamentalism: a naive understanding of innovation, deference to capital, and the denigration of human labor. Our debates are implicitly about all of these and more. A thread 🧵: https://misaligned.markets/tag/ai/ #AI #LLMs #tech #AIbubble #bigtech #poliecon

RE: https://mamot.fr/@pluralistic/116527242149912160 @pluralistic the “revealed preference” of capitalists is that they hate markets. Political economy starts to make more sense when you cleave markets from capitalism and understand that capitalism is a gameable governance structure that supervenes on markets. When we allow capitalists to intentionally conflate capitalism and markets, they're able to use the merits of markets to justify this enshittified billionaire oligarchy.

(1/8) As always @pluralistic writes about exactly what's on my mind a thread 🧵: My political economy begins by taking F.A. Hayek seriously. I kid you not. Hayek saw markets as a form of decentralized processing a logical “spontaneous order” that aggregates knowledge. He saw this pattern everywhere, including within the human mind (I'm sure like Dawkins he'd have been one-shotted by Claude). https://mamot.fr/@pluralistic/116527241278574264 #capitalism #economics #mark...

RE: https://mamot.fr/@pluralistic/116527241278574264 I wrote a thread about this! Markets under capitalism are interfaces where capitalists get to control the inputs. Should we keep using the computer metaphor? Maybe. So long as we recognize this has less to do with computation and more to do with rules. https://zirk.us/@MidniteMikeWrites/116529640608747513

RE: https://mamot.fr/@pluralistic/116532317780734861 @pluralistic wrote a great post on the AI bubble, and this is a standout section. As critical as I've been about the tech in my blog posts, I've tried to make space for people who have/will find useful, scoped applications. Doesn't make any of this worth it. Also, this way of financing creates terrible path-dependencies. But our goal, as I see it now, is to educate and steer society towards better use cases after...

#capitalism is fundamentally a game over asymmetric enforcement of property rights. Nowhere is that clearer than with digital goods, where rights holders control what counts as “access” to the digital products and services we buy. This isn't unlike the brutal fights over land and personhood fought earlier in capitalism's history. This keeps happening because capitalism is a political governance system. https://misaligned.markets/21st-century-property-rights-conflicts/ #rightto...
