@jzb@hachyderm.io Yeah, that was the target audience. I’m sympathetic to lack of affordability on many fronts: housing, cars, groceries, etc. But I’m not sympathetic about gas prices at the pump (though certainly, increasing diesel drives up costs of goods that are trucked to market). Consumers should have learned from past prices & insulated themselves against price spikes by getting the most fuel-efficient vehicle (&/or maximizing bike/walk/transit mobility instead of car ownersh...

@GreenFire@mstdn.social Yeah, who could have predicted that gas prices would rise again? In addition to short-sightedness, the CEOs suffered from another common illness among CEOs: Greed. Marketing & manufacturing big gas trucks & SUVs cuz that’s where the big profits are (soon to be “were”), rather than move their industry forward.

@GreenFire@mstdn.social Yup! I bought mine in the spring of ‘23. A combination of high gas prices & newly passed tax credits put a pinch on the supply of EVs, newer used ones were selling for almost as much as new. And all new EVs at dealerships were spoken for. So I ordered a new one from the factory & waited 3 months. I love the car, especially the value proposition compared to other EVs. The deals on recent model year Bolts right now are crazy.

@gerrymcgovern@mastodon.green I have a general question for you about data centers. I’ve read that in Finland, they’re capturing the “waste” heat and using it to heat buildings and such. With so many gigawatts of heat being generated by these silly data centers, why isn’t heat capture & reuse a requirement? Why aren’t all data centers sited in areas where “waste” heat can (must) be used as a resource? Any policy movement on this?

@danzbichorski@hachyderm.io Indeed. But they have only so much bandwidth, and they have to pursue the cases with the strongest evidence.

I was intrigued by Rivian; thought I might look seriously at their smaller, more affordable SUV for those situations when i want more ruggedness than my Bolt delivers (for snow; logging roads in the Superior National Forest—use cases for 1 percent of my miles). But the more they embrace garbage tech, the more I’m turned off. https://www.forbes.com/sites/brookecrothers/2026/02/28/what-rivians-new-vehicle-ai-is-all-about-and-how-its-taking-on-tesla/ #EV #EVs #Rivian #ChevyBolt #noAI #ai

@GreenFire@mstdn.social I’ll add: In USA gas was dirt cheap yesterday, & has been since the supply pinch of the post-Covid recovery. That will change very soon. But with recent cheap gas, there are killer deals out there now on lightly used EVs. It’s a great time to make the switch & stop funding the #OilyBoys. Especially if one can charge at home. My EV fuel costs <2 cents per mile when I home charge off-peak (which is 95 percent of the time). #EV #EVs #OilWar #GasPrices #NoMor...

@Geri@mastodon.online @jackpearse@nrw.social Yes! Solar + wind + storage + energy efficiency All these things are cheaper long term, and provide independence from fossil fuels. The problem is the up-front costs make it difficult to pivot quickly. Easier to stay addicted to fossil fuel even though it costs more long term.

Hopefully the international community accelerates aid to help them transition.

@Geri@mastodon.online Sucks, and I’m sympathetic to anyone whose energy gets abruptly cut off. But Cuba, like every other country on the planet (including USA), should have spent the last several decades decarbonizing their economy. Everyone knew that decarbonizing was and is the path forward, for environmental, geopolitical, national security, & economic reasons.
