So, I still have this little Intel Nuc that I used to test Guix System during Christmas break 2024 (thread here: https://fediscience.org/@Guillawme/113611195137420871 ). I ended this experiment, but will probably use Guix again one way or another, sometime. At the moment there is a Debian 13 system on this computer. Quite easy to set up, which saved me mental bandwidth to learn other things with it. I managed to set up remote decryption of the luks partition following this tutorial: https://www...

Found a second-hand Intel-NUC from 2015 with decent specs, barely used. So I jumped on this opportunity to test #Guix and #GuixSystem! (Tried before in a VM, it works but isn't as exciting. And not ready to change OS on the laptop I use daily.) Poor little computer broke a sweat upon `guix pull` (from 1.4.0 to current), and now again with `guix system image` (generating an installation iso). I will try to `guix pull` frequently so each is a lighter operation. Very excited to try `guix hom...

Some questions for people into #cryoEM and #biochemistry All pKa values vary with temperature. This is especially apparent with Tris buffer: change of ~ +0.5 pH unit going from room temp to 4Β°C. Proton transfers in acid/base equilibria are very fast. Are they faster than vitrification? In other words, does a change of pKa (due to a rapid drop in temperature) of the buffer compound have the time to change the pH of the solution before it is fully vitrified? There are pH-sensitive fluorophores...

RE: https://wikis.world/@quarknova/116262006249339183 This is great news! I was in fact just coming to the realization that Wikipedia should be listed in my human.json file, so this resolution comes just at the right time.

RE: https://scholar.social/@khinsen/116249052896745512 This is an interesting experiment: bring back the old webring/blogroll concept based on trust between people, to help spot websites written by people in an ever deeper sea of generative AI content on the web. I just added it to my site (linked on my profile), and started building a list of the few sites I read regularly that are unambiguously crafted by humans. Happy to list other people's websites too, so long as they are written...
