EU #ewaste GAMECHANGER: iFixit says that by mid-2027, some EU consumer electronics devices must have user-replaceable batteries. A battery is going to go bad roughly twice as quick as anything else in normal use. This is HUGE and builds on the HUGE win of USB-C for everything. Unfortunately, apparently many phones can be exempted from the process. One way is by meeting "longevity" requirements which is silly to me. https://repair.eu/news/making-batteries-removable-and-replac...

Been thinking about echoes of culture that outlive the source. For example, things your parents heard from their grandparents that they never told you about. Today, we see not a fresh and new 2026, but layers of culture added over the old. Obviously, the cultures and practices of the 1950s are still present today, because people who lived through those times are still alive. More interestingly, there are still traces of the 1900s, because people who were alive then influenced people who are sti...

One of the rarest #PSP UMD films is, oddly, Scarface. The only recent listing was marked at $2000 but sold for under that.

apparently there are 3 porn or porn-adjacent PSP UMDs. these are presumably officially licensed by sony and a bit rare. https://old.reddit.com/r/PSP/comments/185116k/if_you_knowyou_know/

@cinimodev@masto.ctms.me is it maybe compatible with a SuziQ dev cable? Or too old for that. The unlock process is getting worse and worse over time. Fucking Google. IIRC the original chromebook was an external WP screw.

If Strong Bad Email #135 (2005) came out today, Strong Bad's kitschy, 25-year-old technology would be a DVD or HitClip. In the original, they spun a LaserDisc, singing "whatever happened to the LaserDisc?". https://homestarrunner.com/sbemails/135-ladying http://www.hrwiki.org/wiki/lady...ing

the most mysterious people are people who mask indoors but with a surgical mask and not an N95. Best case, they aren't comfortable in an N95 or they can't afford them. Worst case, they are wildly misinformed.

AOM is also working on OAC, the successor to the #Opus audio codec. I'm surprised for a few reasons: 1. Didn't feel like there was any room to grow. AAC is transparent at 192k if not lower. Opus is great at 96k and hopefully transparent at some point (128k?). 2. Opus has been around over a decade yet still feels like it hasn't had its moment. It's used in the background a lot (even at Netflix and Spotify?) but I always hesitate to share Opus because it never seems to fucking wor...
