German car industry warns of job collapse unless ‘bold decisions’ made to address Chinese threat https://www.theguardian.com/business/2026/jul/08/german-car-industry-job-collapse-bold-decisions-address-chinese-threat German car manufacturers dragged their feet on EVs for a decade, allowing Chinese manufacturers to overtake them. They had instead focused on cheating emissions tests (remember #Dieselgate?) and on pushing back against any kind of green regulations. Same companies are now holding their employees hostage, demanding government regulations that benefit them specifically. 🤬

@rysiek@mstdn.social This electric car stuff reminds of when Kodak didn't fully pivot over to digital photography. Short term gains are what shareholders want, and larger changes in the ecosystem are basically impossible for large companies to adapt to.

@rysiek@mstdn.social sounds much the same as the US auto industry. https://mastodon.social/@hyc/116715038060283349

@rysiek@mstdn.social I would argue that is only partly true. Yeah there are quite some issues within the German, rather European automotive industry - but the Chinese threat is far bigger, not only for the automotive area but all high tech products where China decides to compete. The problem is that China does not play by any rules. The currency is completely undervalued, giving them an advantage of 30% - on that alone. The mechanisms that would counteract this are basically blocked.

@rysiek@mstdn.social I know who were paid to make ‘bold decisions’ a decade ago, and instead they doubled down on fossil fuels and faked emissions tests. I know who should pay for this and it’s not the citizens
