During the 1960s or early 1970s, everyone was up in arms about some incident and we heard that Noam Chomsky's answering service (the machines were not yet available) canceled him. It was restore within an hour - presumably because the FBI was wiretapping him and there was nothing to listen to if nobody could get through or leave a message. At least that was the story going around.

A big feature of the US propaganda system is to allow protests like this. Peaceful protests which result in, at most, a little superficial change are helpful to the regime because they act as a safety valve, directing people's energy away from more effective strategies, while at the same time "proving" that the regime is open and democratic because it allows dissenting opinions. Of course any real threats, like the Black Panthers, get eliminated with extreme violence at once, but the Noam Chomskys of the world are tolerated. It's difficult to imagine that the latest No Kings protest has suddenly become so powerful a force that it needs to be suppressed in a heavy-handed way. Are the billionaire oligarchs unaware of the strategy that keeps the guillotines away from their necks? Or do they think that with their ubiquitous surveillance and killer drones, no effective resistance is now possible?

Not sure what the criteria could be, but if we could display those badges on profiles, it may make people take fedi seriously, we are at the point where we are a great community, lets celebrate it. #DigitalBadges #Learning #Credentials

Meta is beyond evil but people just won't wake up to it and/or make up all kinds of excuses why they have to be on their platforms. With actions such as these it becomes increasingly impossible to defend your presence there, just as it becomes increasingly impossible to find actual value on anything Meta. Given how stubborn people are this kind of high profile bans and other shenanigans may be the only thing that does the trick. The only problem is many smaller communities where social life practically runs over FB. Leaving the platform can mean literally being isolated in your own town and not having access to local information. This is a problem across the world and we need to find a solution (which likely will involve local politics and can be difficult depending on how they lean).
