There is a more recent project gbdfed, which appears to be Mark Leisher converting xmbdfed (see uptoot) to the GNOME/GTK+ toolkit. I had _much less_ success in compiling that. Perhaps the fact that Motif lost meant that its APIs and toolkit were preserved in-place, and from the 21st century perspective, it is clearly older, but nothing has changed.

Of course, now that i've done this, i see that xmbdfed is quite well packaged on Linux: AUR: https://github.com/aur-archive/xmbdfed NetBSD: https://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/pkgsrc/current/pkgsrc/fonts/xmbdfed/index.html And SUSE and Ubuntu have the descendent, gbdfed: SUSE: https://packagehub.suse.com/packages/gbdfed/ Ubuntu: https://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/bionic/man1/gbdfed.1.html

So, you see that xmbdfed screenshot in the uptoot, how the pixels in the Glyph Editor are tiny and hard to target with the mouse? That turned out to be int/long size mismatch (possibly two of them) between the struct and the Xtoolkit resources that manage the pixel size. Good old C. I've now fixed that, and the macOS/XQuartz version now looks like its Raspberry Pi counterpart (where int and long are the same size, so the bug exists, but only at a theoretical level). Code shared on codeberg: https://codeberg.org/drj/xmbdfed [edit: it's a different font with a different ampersand, by the way] #xmbdfed
