I'm starting to not like the direction that (some parts of) Linux appear to be heading. The "some parts of" is important, I think. Ultimately the foundation is a kernel. If the kernel stays OK, and people care enough and are willing to learn, can't Linux be steered in any direction we care to go? 🤔 "Linux Is Becoming Android (And Almost No One Noticed)" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EnP1rdx-5So #Linux

@dwarmstrong@fosstodon.org Yes it's possible, but the systems seeking control can buy their way into projects and onto boards to reinstall the control grid access wherever resistance coalesces. How many "free and open source" browsers refused to distribute the proprietary, black-box widevine spyware? All it took was a pittance in donations from a few big-tech corporations colludeding to each buy a seat on the w³c and shove it through to kill the whole concept of an open-source web. How much harder is the desktop to conquer?

  • @dwarmstrong@fosstodon.org Great video, (unfortunately) this is where we are heading. Which shouldn't come as a surprise, Linux is big business. The percentage of 'real' users is still around 1.8 to 2%, the rest is gamers using SteamOS, not Linux users. And they are also looking for this 'convenience', reinforcing this push. Technologically I find this exciting (you know), but I am sure my capability to build my own bootc image will soon disappear. Good there is still a lot of non-systemd choice, and for my private use case I could switch to FreeBSD. Which makes me wonder why I didn't yet 😎
