@benjamineskola@hachyderm.io 🤣
Reddit has 'The Knights Who Read New', kind volunteers who read the cronological feed and vote on it so that people who only read 'hot' have something to read. You can (or could, last time I used it years ago), switch easily between various sortings from 'hot' to 'new' to 'best ever' and more.
If all the banned sites have to do to get unbanned is allow users to switch to default to crono feeds, then the ban will presumably be quite short and every company will do that, at least for UK users?

@pre@boing.world Yeah, I have no idea if it’s a useful definition in practice. A chronological feed by default would be a significant improvement (if not the only problem with those services) and to be honest I do think that’s the source of the vast majority of actual harm. And yet if the government thought that was the real problem then why don’t they just regulate that? It seems to be a side issue if the focus is on the age thing — but I can’t find another way to understand what’s out of scope. (For example why would Whatsapp or Telegram not be included? I believe those have groups you can use as something social-media-like, not simply direct messages with people you know.)
