@anolandria@mastodon.social Goes a lot deeper, too. "If you don't respect me I won't respect you" frequently means "If you don't treat me as an authority, I won't treat you like a person"

@anolandria@mastodon.social And a growing vacuum in the middle range.

@anolandria@mastodon.social Agreed, as the child of a single parent I’ve had many many exhausting conversations with conservatives who straight-up tell me to my face it’s bad. I only argue that the love and care from one parent is enough. In fact it may have advantages as a single parent doesn’t have to deal with their own (sometimes fraught) relationship. And often it ends up being about judging the real-world diversity of families, religious teaching and welfare. Thus ultimately about control.

@anolandria@mastodon.social same for "respect". For lefties it's a mutual thing, for the right it's something you owe "your betters" or else

@anolandria@mastodon.social Conservatives also view obedience as being the same thing as morals. It's why they view anyone who isn't obedient to the same rules they claim to obey as being immoral. So to them, a family not built on obedience is a corrupt and immoral family.

@Twotired@universeodon.com Yes! That’s another really good example. And there are some examples which worked, ie they planted a mind virus, but they were ridiculed, and so nobody noticed how well it worked. This is an age specific reference probably, but “this is your brain, this is your brain on drugs” as a campaign in the late 80s was widely mocked by everyone. And yet, my kid, born in the 21st century, knows the meme. See also: “I learned it from you dad, I learned it from you” @aptitude@mastodon.social @anolandria@mastodon.social
