Reveille
I have heard the bells in the black of the midnight
I have seen the hills where the soldiers’ columns go.
I have climbed the cliffs soaring out past the fortress
I have felt the heavy blast of the cannons go.
- Sing requiem, wandering, wandering home alone.
- Set sail on the waves, on the roiling sea alone.
In the leaves, in the stillness, on empty hillsides
In the clover-covered dew-dampened soil below
Where the tumbledown branches lay scattered like bones
Where the stream’s soft caress cools the stones down below.
- Speak canticles, foraging delicacies found
- Set out meals for the souls, for the souls we have found.
When the mourning is over the morning will come
When the fog slips away and the light starts to rise
When bells have all gone silent, the candles gone out,
We will watch the spirits, we will watch as they rise.
- Play reveille, trumpet, and sing out for the dawn.
- Set the stage for the gold, for the new-rising dawn.
