I have a #RocketKiln that fires using scrap wood but I've never heard of a traditional wood fire kiln using scrap wood to fire. Typically, people either chop their own over the course of a year or buy cords of wood which can be very expensive. Josh DeWeese, a well-known ceramic artist, shows his wood fired kiln in this video that uses throwaway wood from local cabinet makers who are happy to give it to him rather than pay to dump it. https://ceramicartsnetwork.org/clayflicks/clayflicks-video/Wood-Firing-and-Studio-Tour-with-Josh-DeWeese #ceramics #kiln #pottery

@potterybyosa@mastodon.social we should use everything that we have sustainably knowing that any time it may get exhausted. Thanks for the great innovations about the wood used in the kiln. Have you also tried the wood shaves got when making timber? I habe seen people use it in certain stoves for fuel instead of charcoal

  • So, I just texted my woodfire friend about this and I guess it's not as uncommon as I thought to woodfire using scrap wood, but there are certain advantages to using fresh logs instead of scrap. Also, Josh DeWeese fires for a relatively short time and also adds salt and soda for glaze & surface effects which not all wood firers do.

  • @potterybyosa@mastodon.social Wow, a #RocketKiln ! I found some designs on line. Now I just need to source the materials, this sounds like a great Wintertime project.
