Gloucester City Council has VoNC'd its own leader. Labour, Tory and Independent voted against the Lib Dem administration who lost 21-18. But then they refused to actually submit another leader for consideration (instead, the Lib Dem leader, Jeremy Hilton, was submitted...and again defeated 21-18) so now there is no leader or cabinet. The council is effectively bankrupt because after a ransomware attack they did no accounting. I mean, seriously, zero accounting. No tracking of revenue or expenses at all. For multiple years. Then they "discovered" enormous "overspends" (UK councils have to legally run a balanced budget). They got a bailout (£15.5 million), but then "discovered" more "overspends" and want another bailout. They can't deficit spend because of a Thatcher-era law and can't privatise anything (ignoring the obvious follies of this) because nobody wants to buy their incompetently run assets (like the shopping centres and airport) which lose millions per year. They are also in debt of £124 million, while their entire budget for the year is £22.6 million. Seriously. They also minimise council tax increases to <=3% in order to prevent pissing off the voters. (I guess Gloucester is a Reform/Lib Dem swing area with some Tories these days? but reform not doing so hot rn...so probably lib dem) One of the independents is an illegal puppy farmer and another once claimed that asylum seekers were eating all the grass (which is not just extremely racist but just bizarre. There are sheep everywhere in the area, did you consider that? In fact the grass is so overgrown in some places that if the asylum seekers really were eating all the grass, I wouldn't mind) Never been so happy to live on the other side of the A40 and have Tewkesbury Borough Council, who can at least handle basic accounting!!
