@mark@mastodon.fixermark.com @kytta@polymaths.social AFAIK just copying another dictionary for your own dictionary without even attributing it is not considered ethical. And data scraping for the purposes of representing that data as your own is often called "stealing" in common parlance.

@Asimech@mastodon.social @kytta@polymaths.social Common parlance is meaningfully flawed there. Plagiarism is a thing and copyright infringement is a thing; You can't "steal" an idea. Believing you can leads us to The Bad Place where Disney gets to jail people for depriving them of market opportunities. What manner of theft leaves us with the robbed and the robber both having the stolen good? I try to avoid the mental shortcut of claiming plagiarism or copyright infringement and theft are the same; copyright is firmly grounded (in the US at least) in the purpose "To promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts" and it should always be evaluated as such. (Which, of course: yes, we should be very concerned about the idea that artists will just quit making art if they feel it isn't worth it if an AI is just going to eat their style and do what they do for near free. But I think a reasonable case can be made in the case of Maps that, since when a map is wrong people get lost or hurt, Google should at least be using the data to validate its own concept of ground truth and refresh its own collected information if it finds a deviation between what it's showing and what osm shows. Everyone should!).
