A quantum-resistant cryptography algorithm that was under consideration to become an official US standard has been taken out of the running after an Anthropic security model helped find a flaw that rendered it broken. https://arstechnica.com/security/2026/07/mythos-uncovers-crypto-weaknesses-that-went-unknown-for-years/

  • @dangoodin@infosec.exchange Do you have anything on how long the project was? What was the cost of the not-reported research in human time and in tokens?

@dangoodin@infosec.exchange wonder what the odds of either attack turning out like this proof are https://infosec.exchange/@0xabad1dea/117002106099986943

@dangoodin@infosec.exchange Hmm. I was thinking of hanging up my #muddle persona, but I think I can keep it up in a post-quantum world.

@dangoodin@infosec.exchange ironic that one of the biggest threats to privacy may be a tool for improving privacy

@dangoodin@infosec.exchange I'm experienced but not expert in this area, and it seems to me we are missing the "threat model" classification. We generally categorize somebody willing to spend $100,000 to break your messages as a "state-level actor", or at least Fortune 500 corporate actor or oligarch. You need a whole data center full of GPUs to iterate on these problems, and of course Anthropic has access to that. It's not "LLM" or "AI" that did this, it's raw compute power, and the willingness to spend it.

@dangoodin@infosec.exchange was it an algorithm proposed by the NSA? 😂
