@stib@aus.social @siftinsand@aus.social Cassowaries are scary as crap in person. They're mostly safe as long as you don't piss them off, unfortunately they have short tempers and find many things not to their liking.

@stib@aus.social @siftinsand@aus.social I "met" one of those in Australia From a safe distance... He looked at me The best way to describe the way he looked at me is "hostile"...

@stib@aus.social there used to be one in a semi open zoo not far from hare. IIRC, it was in an enclosure with a ~1m high wall, which to me felt like really not enough. Since I understand these things are very well regulated here in France, I trusted the zoo, but maybe I should have run from there... @siftinsand@aus.social

@stib@aus.social @siftinsand@aus.social For those outside Australia the best way to describe cassowaries is they are the meth-head bogan in-bred cousin of the emu.

@stib@aus.social @siftinsand@aus.social I think we made a mistake with the whole "drop bear" thing. Now tourists are on guard for wildlife warning larrakinisms. They don't take us seriously when we say "This bird will kick your guts out if you give it the chance."
