I was reminded today that I have found very, very few conferences I am personally prepared to spend much on a ticket for. I tend to find I get more out of the grassroots community events that aren't high cost, but perhaps I'm missing out on something?

@noodles@social.earth.li I am reminded of how #OSCON escalated into being an event that no FOSS volunteer could ever possibly afford. LF events are now the same; they have taken over that business that O'Reilly no longer wanted. At the time, I thought that it was the place to be, and just get a talk accepted and then you get a gratis ticket. In retrospect, I realize that is part of the trick. Any event that doesn't have a "volunteer credentials" fee waiver is suss.
