@iris_meredith@mastodon.social At the moment I’m just happy to have switched to GNOME recently (for unrelated reasons), so I can enjoy all this from the spectator’s seat. Of course, it’s probably only a matter of time until the GNOME project will have to make the same decisions – and who knows how they will decide. (And with “they” I mean “us” – technically speaking I’m now part of the GNOME project. If it takes a wrong turn, migrating my project from their infrastructure, rebranding etc., this will get very ugly.)

@iris_meredith@mastodon.social Red Hat (IBM) has been pushing AI on its devs, and I see AI code from specific Gtk devs (but not all of them). Gnome will be built on some of this code. I blame IBM myself. The closer a project is to corpos, the worse their headthink seems to get. Which is a shame.

@iris_meredith@mastodon.social As a long time (decade or so long) user of KDE, I, too, was worried. Read through the actual forum discussions and arguments and I think you'll become a lot less worried. There's a (very) small number of people pushing a pro-AI agenda, but largely resistance from KDE devs while trying to acknowledge and manage that some people are going to use these LLMs regardless and want it to stay about the people. This was some days ago, so ymmv, but I doubt it. Came away much more relaxed.
