Check it out, I accidentally replaced an 8 bit 1010 RGB with a 16 bit one and turns out it still works. I'm guessing the reason for the different color is it's taking RRGGBB from 2 LEDs' RGBRGB data. I would've expected there'd be issues with having a start/stop frame in the middle but apparently not.
