I just had an epiphany (I don't think it is a revolutionary idea, it just occurred to be for real for the first time) that one of the more important things a manager must do, to be successful is to deal with massive asymmetries. A manager (especially if you're a CEO, for example) has a thousand important things to manage. One of your people may come to you with a singular thing that is the most important thing to them right now. It is your job to understand and respect that and treat it ... 1/2

... like it is the most important thing for you as well in that moment. If you let the "underling" feel like their thing is completely unimportant (Or, if you cancel a meeting about it last second, because more important things), you not only create a feeling of disrespect, you also hamper the ability of that person to do their job properly. Guess at which end of this I found myself today and how it went.
