I've just signed the open letter showing support for the brave volunteers and staff at the RNLI, will you add your name too and then share it far and wide?
Imagine this was you. Volunteering to risk your life to save others at sea, then being abused and attacked in person and harassed online as a result. That happened in Portsmouth last Sunday night. A group of men hurled abuse at lifeboat rescuers coming back to shore after saving lives: calling them traitors, scum and then putting footage of them online.
It’s completely unacceptable, and goes against our values as a country.
Every day the RNLI and its brave volunteers do an incredible job to make sure all those in waters around the UK are safe. From holidaymakers enjoying the sea to migrants caught in desperate terrifying situations, they carry out vital work protecting lives. And a minority of people who are abusing them should not be able to undermine their cause.
So we want to prove it's just a small number of hurling abuse, and show RNLI volunteers and staff the public have their backs. We want to make it clear that these attacks are not in our name, and these people calling them scum do not speak for us. So we're launching a huge letter of support and thanks today. Please add your name now.
