    @VeroniqueB99@mastodon.social At least in Germany, legally, you cannot be required to be available or even read work related messages outside of your contractual work hours. Contract clauses that ask for availability during days off (mandated, at a minimum 24 days/year, plus holidays and Sundays) are invalid.

    @VeroniqueB99@mastodon.social My employer gave me an email account for work and nobody can contact me there when I've gone home for the day. And I telecommute from my own basement. PS: #altText4All!

    @VeroniqueB99@mastodon.social : I have gone caving on weekends I did not want to be bothered. Know what *does not work* in a cave? Cell phones. Can't get a radio signal through solid rock! 😆

  • @VeroniqueB99@mastodon.social The complaining from adults when someone called the house phone during dinner were also memorable

    @VeroniqueB99@mastodon.social You've conveniently forgotten pagers.

    @VeroniqueB99@mastodon.social A brief tale for the younger people: One of my first jobs in IT had “pager admin” as part. A pager (one way, effectively a portable caller id box) was a status symbol of being in IT or otherwise “important” but not as important as the rare people with work cell phones. (IT had on-call cell phones that got passed around.) I was testing a neat 2 way Motorola pagers that I think were basically SMS devices. Not bad tech, really, but clunky. And the the BlackBerry hit. The BlackBerry was huge because it was ‘real’ work email and felt immediate. Users were addicted to it. Lots of distracted usage in movies or during meetings. It had a high cost, requiring a server to connect to the Exchange environment. But it was a huge deal and users loved them. Years before the iPhone made mobile web a lot more practical, the BB made mobile email practical. To quote Steve Jobs, it just worked. I didn’t get a BB until years later and, obviously, the company has seen better days. I rarely check my work email outside work now: I have it on my personal phone, but the iOS Exchange client is so miserable it’s frustrating. Email itself has gone from empowering to background noise.

    @VeroniqueB99@mastodon.social If the company doesn't pay for my phone service (probably only 10% in my history), then I don't have company email client on my phone. I currently have a bridge email account that goes to my Telegram client, but that only came into play after making sure it wouldn't be used unless things were on fire, (i.e., a SEV-1 or such) but I'd be available for such. So far, it's been ok over the past 6 years. It's not a perfect separation, but if it got bad, I'll just kill the bridge gmail account.

    @VeroniqueB99@mastodon.social I don't answer work calls or emails from Thusday evening until Monday Noon... My prerogative, my business, my health (done so for years and I recommend).
