"Who needs labels anyway?" sounds progressive, but isn't. A 'label' can give people language for their experiences, a basis for organising, and access to a community. The interesting question - I think - isn't whether we have categories or not (we do. Ask any librarian or linguist). It's who gets to make and use the categories... and for what purpose. 💟 #Autism #ActuallyAutistic #ADHD #AuDHD #Neurodivergent #SocialJustice #EpistemicInjustice

@KatyElphinstone@mas.to The freedom to choose a label, or choose no label at all - that's probably where the real progress lies.

@KatyElphinstone@mas.to I hate it when people act dismissive of labels and then act all smug about it like they mastered the matrix or something.

@KatyElphinstone@mas.to The problem comes from letting the label define who you are (instead of just you identifying with the label)

@KatyElphinstone@mas.to i hate how in many cases this line of reasoning is also used to misgender people ...

@KatyElphinstone@mas.to I personally refuse to label myself in public. That's me showing I do not consent to be treated in ways that are connected to labels that were applied to me before I was able to consent to them. It's frustrating to see trying to opt out of getting labeled being turned into yet another thing with implicit meanings attached that is getting pushed on people who didn't ask for it. It reminds me of how cis people turned nonbinary into a single gender with androgynous expectations attached, instead of letting it be a broad category defined only by what it's not. It would be great if the entire world could agree to use labels strictly for communication, and not attach extra meanings for the purpose of oppressing each other using hierarchies.

@KatyElphinstone@mas.to I completely understand and respect this argument, but I'm still not at ease with labels. I think they are extremely dangerous because they shape and limit our own experience of something and while this simplification can have good secondary effects, it's not enough for me. Especially since so many psychological labels are absolutely not well constructed from an elistemological point of view. We should fight for a word in which everyone is treaded good regardless of labels.

@KatyElphinstone@mas.to If you haven't met it before, 'Category Theory' is about classifying objects and functional behaviour. To be fair, Category Theory maps well to most things, which is why it's so useful and powerful. IMO you're spot-on with 'labeling', and this maps well as an abstraction for social conventions. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category_theory
