@Em0nM4stodon@infosec.exchange Exactly so. I only trust hackers, tux, anarchists and kittens. I like the smaller Mastodon instances too... I must be a little naive. I live in a surveillance city. Family members leave their corporate spyware on. At the library I use Windows 11.

@Em0nM4stodon@infosec.exchange It is deeply sad and chliiing. Fundamental to societal cohesion and health is people safely talking with and greeting strangers. Even simple things like a nod or smile. This article adds to the already toxic head- and smart-phone indulgences that put self ahead of others.

@Em0nM4stodon@infosec.exchange I'm gonna drop them an email. I honestly beg them not to do this. I think it's a huge, enormous mistake. Btw they do actually read and listen to emails. When people kicked off about the on-device CSAM scanning stuff, they did change direction on it. https://www.apple.com/feedback/watch/

@Em0nM4stodon@infosec.exchange Forgive me my tinfoil hat, but this corroborates a conspiracy theory I came up with all by myself, several years ago now: I believe that this is the real reason why they stopped having removable batteries in phones. I mean, I think they were deliberately trying to normalize the idea that it's physically impossible for anyone to make their phone lose power while proving that. If I take my phone out, take the battery out, and set both of them down next to each other where we can both see it, then you know with absolute certainty that I'm not recording you, or at least not on my phone. Even if my phone got hacked, and even if I honestly didn't know that, the conversation is still lost. I think they don't want you to be able to remove the battery because they don't want you to be able to do that.

@Em0nM4stodon@infosec.exchange This is the reason I just disabled Siri on my old Apple watch.

@Em0nM4stodon@infosec.exchange just gotta get a casio F-19w (or A159w if you're feeling fancy). No one will think you're suspicious then.

@Em0nM4stodon@infosec.exchange I don't wear a smartwatch. In fact, I stopped wearing a regular watch after getting my first mobile phone around the turn of the millennium since the phone had a system clock, making the watch redundant. And I feel so much better without constantly wearing that piece of equipment on my wrist, and I do like wearing bracelets every now and then, but I think the wristwatch had always been a step in the wrong direction after the pocket watch. If you're worried about the time so much that you always need to have it on your wrist, that you cannot take the additional second it takes to take your chronometer out of your pocket, something has gone wrong in your life.

Context: https://www.apple.com/apple-watch-series-12/#:~:text=Live%20Rewind%20catches%20what%20you%C2%A0missed Live Rewind catches what you missed. Did someone say something you couldn’t hear in a loud restaurant or share cooking instructions you didn’t quite catch? Just double-click the Digital Crown, and Live Rewind transcribes what was said in the last 15 seconds. You can ask Siri about the content of the transcript or save it to the new Siri app to revisit later. #AppleWatch #AppleWatchSeries12

@Em0nM4stodon@infosec.exchange will there Be some stupid backlash.... Well, if you don't have anything to hide you shouldn't worry shit, and then NOT having a watch starts to mean something alt or criminal. Not cool, man!

@Em0nM4stodon@infosec.exchange Like many here, not a day goes by where I don't wonder: how did - and does - all this happen right under our watchful noses? And then I remember how it's always been done - slowly! Only these days, the poolside snacks taste so much more irresistible.

@Em0nM4stodon@infosec.exchange And a quick note: many states in the US are "all-party consent" states, and it's a felony to secretly record conversations. In Massachusetts--and probably other places--you even have the ability to sue someone who secretly records you.

@Em0nM4stodon@infosec.exchange I think your point about erosion of trust is the big issue here and I had the same initial gut reaction. But this particular always listening feature isn’t as useful in gathering evidence. Unlike the Meta glasses the transcript doesn’t identify the speaker since it isn’t an audio recording. Say it records a transcript “I’m going to punch you latca.” I could have plausibly said it myself near the watch as another person I am accusing. It can’t prove anything.

@Em0nM4stodon@infosec.exchange It became a cultural problem many years ago with the IoT craze making it normal to surround oneself with mic and sensor-laden devices that only provide assurances about what they are really doing.

@Em0nM4stodon@infosec.exchange I didn't know the watches now have video capabilities. Meta glasses have useful AI features for the blind but do have privacy concerns too.
