I understand why the industry is calling these "1D" versus "2D" (they're read in 1 dimension versus being read in 2 dimensions), but this is a very stupid naming scheme that is entirely self-inflicted. They are "barcodes" (the old ones, formatted as a bar, read in 1 dimension) and "QR codes" (the new ones, formatted as a square, read in 2 dimensions).
