Whoever becomes the next US President will inherit huge problems, which they will be ill-equipped to solve. This is primarily because of the size of the problems. To be addressed properly, they require a degree of political consensus and functioning institutions, neither of which seem to be on the horizon.
So either it will be another Obama who will then be blamed for either not doing enough or of being directionally wrong, or it will be someone truly horrible like J.D. Vance who will continue the destruction.
Back in 2016, and perhaps even earlier than that, I came to the belief that, despite his inexperience and unjustified idealism, Barack Obama was a better president than the US "deserved". And by electing Trump twice, and barely rejecting him once, I believe that Americans have supplied evidence that supports my belief.

There's a sizable lag between a policy change and the effects of that change. For an inattentive population, this lag causes people to misidentify the causes behind the undesirable effects. At least on the time-scale of a decade or two, this causes people to vote for unsuitable candidates.

I don't live in the US, but like everyone else on the planet, I am affected by the actions of the US government. I'm much more, and more directly, affected by the governments in my country, state, and municipality.
