I am not a coder these days. I direct Claude to do nearly everything. I am told this is the way, this is what the company wants, and I do it, because I know how bad the tech job market is. I’m still able to generate passable code because I have those decades of experience to look over the results and say, “Hey, no, that’s wrong, fix that”. It isn’t great but it’s Good Enough™️. But I know junior devs are being fucked over. They won’t get those years of experience that I did when an LLM does what they’d be doing. Part of me doesn’t mind directing Claude all day. I feel guilty about that. But modern web coding has felt like an impenetrable mess of bullshit to me for so long, I’m glad not to have to deal with it. There was a simplicity to coding that feels lacking today, and I don’t know how much of that was real, and how much is just aging and rose-colored nostalgia.
