Pals, I think I'm getting somewhere.
It remains responsive as it's a duplicate grid that matches the cell count from the one below it (with all the images and stuff), and I am using ::before for the horizontal line, ::after for the vertical, on each "invisible" cell.

Cloned grid can get in the bin 🚮 just applying the ::before and ::after on the original grids items now. ::before border-top / border-bottom / scale: 1.2 1; ::after border-left / border-right / scale: 1 1.2;
