I once told my daughter ninjas are a type of assassin and she thought I was teasing her.

@ZachWeinersmith Tintin never writes any news article. James Bond never spies on anyone.

@ZachWeinersmith The correct answer, of course, is that they are a type of gardener.

@ZachWeinersmith Yeah! I've never noticed it but it checks out: - knights - not necessarily landed aristocrats with pledge to the crown

@ZachWeinersmith the ninja case is a good one because even the classic and realistic ones (assassin in black clothes with some unusual weapons) are fictionalizations from the more common but less spectacular ones (common clothes and posing as servants, monks or any other person with access to important people waiting for an opportunity to kill or just gather information).

@ZachWeinersmith I mean, technically vikings are a type of pirate.

@ZachWeinersmith immediately envisioned a venn diagram overlap between your life and the PlayStation 2 RPG Disgaea labeled "young girl doesn't quite grasp what ninjas and assassins are"

@ZachWeinersmith Worth noting that, according to wikipedia, "Current legends to the contrary, there is little evidence that they were assassins.[4]" It does note them being used as spies and mercenaries, though.
